Amaro Yerba — Italian amaro with yerba mate

Threshold

Some rituals begin after dark.

01The Moon

An ancient Guaraní legend tells of the goddesses Yací and Araí — the moon and the cloud. They came down to earth as young women, to admire its nature. In the heart of the forest, a hunter saved them from a jaguar. That night the goddesses appeared to him in a dream. In gratitude they entrusted him with a gift meant for all people:

yerba mate, a symbol of friendship and brotherhood.

02The raw material

A branch of yerba mate: green leaves with serrated edges, hills in the background.
Cut yerba mate: fragments of dried leaf and pale pieces of palo, the stem.

Yerba Mate

Ilex paraguariensis

For centuries part of everyday life across Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and southern Brazil.

Leaves and palo.

We start from Argentine yerba mate with leaves and palo, the woody part of the plant. A light roasting brings out its character: herbal, toasted, faintly smoky.
